Composing for Online Music Lessons

The Creative Connected Communities research centre at Falmouth University, Cornwall, invites applications for a three-year full-time Doctoral studentship, fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), to undertake research into the design and development of new musical materials intended for online musical instrument lessons.
Online musical instrument lessons, through the use of videoconferencing platforms such as Skype, offer students and teachers greater flexibility, coverage, and the opportunity to study at a lower cost, and platforms such as Online Orchestra, developed by researchers at Falmouth, enable musicians in multiple locations to play together in real time. This PhD will aim to develop a portfolio of musical compositions designed explicitly for the purpose of online musical instrument lessons.
Based in the Academy of Music and Theatre Arts at Falmouth University, the successful applicant will work within a team of researchers currently working in the area of telematic performance. We expect research students to take a full and active role in the Research Centre, including taking part in regular workshops, conferences and seminars. The studentship commences October 2017, and the successful candidate can expect to develop their own dissertation topic within the wider remit of the project.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate at interview:
• imaginative and viable preliminary ideas for research into this subject area
• an appreciation of the nature of PhD study and of both independent and collaborative research
• clear motivation for undertaking PhD study in Falmouth in this subject area
• evidence that you have, or can develop, the skills required to start the proposed research
