Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra (CYWO)

Director - Sara Munns

CYWO was formed in September 1985 for the County Music Service’s Celebration of European Music Year. Alongside the other major county ensembles, it gives young instrumentalists throughout the county the opportunity of making music together.

CYWO has an excellent team of highly skilled, professional coaching staff which is supplemented by visiting international players and composers. There is a fantastic sense of team work and enthusiasm amongst the players and this produces outstanding performances.

Concert programmes have included a wide range of symphonic band music drawn from classical, romantic and twentieth century repertoire, and several new commissioned works.

Over the years, the orchestra has performed at the Edinburgh Festival and in London as part of the An Gof celebrations.  It has been involved in a compositional project with members of the London Sinfonietta and toured Strasbourg.

CYWO has played at Symphony Hall, Birmingham at the National Festival of Music for Youth and has recently worked with Kate Moore, the principal trumpet of the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2016, the orchestra’s celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a British Premiere of Once Upon a Time by Jan Van der Roost. This was a joint performance with the Cornwall Girls’ Choir and the Hall for Cornwall Youth Dance and Youth Theatre Companies. CYWO also toured the Isles of Scilly in July 2016.
