Cornwall Youth Percussion Ensemble

When: Wednesdays 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Where: Truro School

Cornwall Youth Percussion Ensemble was founded in 1984 and since then has recorded 2 CD’s, taken part in the Bremen Music Festival in Germany, performed in the Schools’ Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, performed for Her Majesty the Queen during the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002 and received a standing ovation from nearly 200 Heads of Music services from around the UK when they performed at the Federation of Music Services’ awards ceremony at the British Library in London, in recognition of Cornwall Music Service (now Music Cornwall) being voted an ‘outstanding music service’.

The Ensemble rehearses weekly during term time in Truro and players represent Cornwall’s finest young percussionists. Repertoire ranges from adaptations of classical works such as Khachaturian’s ‘Sabre Dance’, through pop and jazz arrangements, minimalist works such as Steve Reich’s ‘Drumming’ and ‘Music for Pieces of Wood’ to contemporary works by John Cage and a particularly effective arrangement of Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’.

The repertoire chosen is intended to make the best possible use of Music Cornwall’s extensive collection of percussion instruments including pedal timpani, marimba, vibraphone, tubular bells, drum kit, Latin American instruments such as congas and bongos and an array of many of the more obscure / rare instruments such as tuned gongs, tam-tams, thundersheets, darabuka and many more!
