Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra (CYWO) – Director Janet Elston
CYWO was formed in September 1985 and made its debut in the City Hall, Truro in November under guest conductor Geoffrey Brand. CYWO has become a lasting result of the County Music Service’s Celebration of European Music Year 1985. Alongside the other major county ensembles, it gives young instrumentalists throughout the county the opportunity of making music together.
Over the years, the orchestra has performed at the Edinburgh Festival and Blackheath, London as part of the An Gof celebrations, has also been involved in a compositional project with members of the London Sinfonietta and has worked with BBC Concert Orchestra players. In 2003, as well as the tour to Strasbourg in April, the orchestra took part in a day of creative work / coaching on the Strasbourg repertoire under the guidance of National Youth Orchestra staff. Two years later in 2006, the orchestra undertook a week long concert tour of Poland, giving performances in three cities.
In July 2011 CYWO players were involved in a workshop/recording session with the Central Band of the RAF. The players spent two days in the excellent music facilities at RAF Uxbridge and successfully recorded James Barnes’ Symphony no.3 and Prelude to Revelry by Gordon Jacob, the latter of which was recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast.
In 2012/13 the orchestra worked with players from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and also filmed their own black and white movie. Concert programmes have included a wide range of symphonic band music drawn from classical, romantic and twentieth century repertoire, and several new commissioned works.
