Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra - FREE Teacher Training

On behalf of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Cornwall Music Education Hub we are delighted to offer two free CPD session for teachers that will provide ideas and materials to support literacy teaching using music. These session is part of the BSO’s residency in Cornwall in January 2016 and is funded by the Cornwall Music Education Hub.

These free training events will take place on:

Monday 11th January (16.00 – 18.00) at Charlestown Primary School in St Austell

Wednesday 13th January (16.15 - 18.15) at St Neots Primary School

We would like to thank these schools for hosting these events and invite teachers from primary schools in the area to come along to this free training.

About the training - Developing literacy using music

There is extensive research which demonstrates the impact of music on a wide range of cognitive and emotional skills in children’s development, and it should be noted that the first area where students have demonstrated an increase in achievement is literacy. BSO understand the challenges of incorporating music into teaching, especially if teachers do not consider themselves to be a musician. This session is therefore designed to suggest practical ways of integrating music and literacy which could offer new ways in for students, whilst also being achievable within the time and resources available.

During this training, attendees will:

• explore methods of creating music based on text/word patterns
• use music as a basis for exploring stories/poetry within the curriculum use music as a way of embedding concepts within wider humanities
• have the opportunity to discuss approaches as a group
• leave with a bank of new ideas for combined arts and literacy that they are able to effectively implement in their lesson planning
