iOrchestra is an amazing opportunity to step inside an extraordinary orchestra. Last year 45,000 people took up that opportunity in Plymouth, Torbay and Cornwall. This year, the Philharmonia is returning to each of those locations, with a new immersive digital installation, creative projects for all ages and abilities, an updated version of the iOrchestra truck and a fresh programme of live concerts.
MusicLab - The Truck
In the iOrchestra Truck you will find MusicLab, a mobile pop-up play and create which invites you to step into the shoes of a conductor, a composer, a horn-player, a clarinetist, a timpanist, and a cellist. Be introduced to the Philharmonia Orchestra and its work, by the people who know it best: its players. Record yourself, singing with them, and discover how the instrumental families work, and what the Philharmonia do when they’re not playing in concerts. As last year, MusicLab will be visiting Penzance, Liskeard, Redruth, Bodmin and St Austell. Visits to MusicLab are completely free.
There are bookable sessions for school and community groups plus drop-in sessions for families after 3.30 each day and on Saturdays. The MusicLab truck will be in each town on the following dates:
• Penzance, Harbour Car Park - 8th to 13th June 2015
• Liskeard, Westbourne Car Park - 15th to 20th June 2015
• Redruth, Heartands - 22nd to 27th June 2015
• Bodmin, Priory Car Park - 29th June to 4th July 2015
• St Austell, Polkyth Car Park - 6th to 11th July 2015
Universe of Sound - The Tent
In the iOrchestra Tent you will find Universe of Sound – a multi-screen digital orchestra, in which 103 musicians from the Philharmonia, and Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salanon will take you on a journey through Gustav Holst’s The Planets from the inside out. Visiting it is like walking into the middle of the orchestra as they perform. The Universe of Sound giant marquee will be on Lemon Quay in Truro from 29th June to 11th July 2015.
Free concerts
The whole project culminates in a free outdoor public concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra on Lemon Quay on Sunday 12th July at 5.00 and a concert for schools on 13th July at the Hall for Cornwall.
All the iOrchestra events are free
Community outreach
Before, during, and after each of these events, the Philharmonia have been working with community groups creating opportunities for composing, performing, dancing, animating, exploring and inhabiting the world of orchestral music.
Community and School choirs, bands and choirs are also able to book either the MusicLab Truck or Universe of Sound Tent as an evening performance space. For further details and to book a performance slot, contact Edward Mackay
